Karthika Masam 2026: Why It Is the Holiest Month

Karthika Masam 2026: Why It Is the Holiest Month

Karthika Masam 2026 runs from Tuesday 10 November to Tuesday 8 December. For thirty days, Telugu homes wake before dawn, light a lamp at dusk and read one chapter of the Karthika Puranam a night. Here is what happens, why it matters, and how to keep it wherever you live.

When Is Karthika Masam 2026?

Karthika is the eighth month of the Telugu lunar calendar, beginning the day after Deepavali Amavasya. In 2026 it starts on Tuesday 10 November and ends on Tuesday 8 December. In the USA, UK and Canada the month begins a day earlier, on Monday 9 November, because the new tithi falls on Monday evening there.

Families abroad get a fifth Somavaram on 9 November. Vanabhojanam has no fixed date; most families choose a Sunday in the second half of the month.

Why Is Karthika the Holiest Month?

Because both Shiva and Vishnu claim it. No other month belongs to both.

The Shaiva story: Shiva destroyed the three flying cities of the asura Tripura with a single arrow on Karthika Pournami. The devas lit lamps in gratitude, and the lamp of Karthika became Shiva's lamp. That is why Karthika Deepam burns on the full moon, and why Somavaram, Shiva's day, is fasted all month.

The Vaishnava story: Vishnu sleeps on the ocean of milk for four months from Ashada Ekadashi. On Karthika Shukla Ekadashi he wakes. The next day, Ksheerabdi Dwadashi, he marries Tulasi, and weddings and shubha karyams, paused through the monsoon, begin again.

The Karthika Puranam says that a lamp lit in this month, a bath taken before sunrise, and a chapter read aloud each night earn more than the same acts in any other month. Whether you read that as scripture or as a thirty-day discipline, the effect is the same: a month where the whole household lives a little more carefully.

What Do You Do Every Day in Karthika?

Four things, and none of them need a pandit.

  • Karthika snanam before sunrise. A bath in cold water before the sun is up, in a river if you can, at home if you cannot. The texts say the water of every river holds Ganga's grace this month.
  • Deepam at dusk. One lamp at the Tulasi, one at the front door, one before the pooja shelf. Sesame oil is traditional; ghee is fine. The lamp at the door is the one the neighbours see, and it is the one the month is named for.
  • One adhyaya of the Karthika Puranam. Thirty chapters, one a night, read aloud after the lamp. Families who cannot read Telugu listen to it.
  • Tulasi puja. Water in the morning, a lamp in the evening, pradakshina if there is room. Tulasi is Lakshmi's form in the home, and this is her month.

Many households also take one meal a day, avoid onion and garlic, and give up non-vegetarian food for the thirty days. Do what your family has always done. The month rewards consistency more than intensity.

Karthika Somavaram: Why Mondays?

Monday is Shiva's day, and Karthika is Shiva's month, so the Mondays of Karthika are the most observed fasts of the Telugu year. There are four in 2026: 16, 23 and 30 November and 7 December.

How it is kept: snanam before sunrise, Shiva abhishekam at a temple or at home, a day-long fast, and the fast broken after sighting the evening star with a simple meal. Many keep nirjala, without water, until the lamp is lit. Those who cannot fast fully take fruit or one meal.

Why it matters: the Karthika Puranam gives the Somavaram vratam its own story, of a poor Brahmin woman whose single lamp on a Karthika Monday carried her to Shiva's abode. The point is not the hunger. It is that one Monday a week, for a month, the household turns toward Shiva together.

Nagula Chavithi: Why Milk at the Anthill? (13 November)

On the fourth day of Karthika, Telugu women take milk, turmeric, kumkum and chalimidi to an anthill and pour the milk into it, calling on the Naga devatas. This is Nagula Chavithi, and it is one of the few festivals that is almost entirely ours.

Why: the serpent is the guardian of the earth's wealth and of the family's children. The anthill is Naga's home. Women pray there for the health of their children, for fertility, and for protection from fear. Many families also keep the day for the ancestors, since the Nagas are the keepers of the underworld.

The vrata is kept with a fast until the milk is offered, and chalimidi and vadapappu are eaten after. Abroad, a Naga image at the pooja shelf receives the same milk and turmeric; the anthill is the ideal, not the rule.

Ksheerabdi Dwadashi: The Day Vishnu Marries Tulasi (21 November)

On Shukla Ekadashi, 20 November, Vishnu wakes from his four-month sleep on the ocean of milk. The next day is Ksheerabdi Dwadashi, the day of the ocean of milk, when he marries Tulasi. It is also called Chilukula Dwadashi.

What families do: in the evening, the Tulasi plant is dressed as a bride, an usiri branch is placed beside her as Vishnu, and lamps are lit around the pot. A small wedding is performed with turmeric, kumkum, bangles and a sari for Tulasi. The katha of Vrinda and Jalandhara is told.

Why it matters beyond the ritual: this is the day the Chaturmasya ends. Marriages, griha pravesh and upanayanam, paused since July, can be fixed again from here. If your family is planning a wedding, this is the day the muhurtam calendar reopens.

Karthika Pournami: The Night of Lamps (24 November)

If the month has one night, it is this one. Karthika Pournami is the full moon on which Shiva defeated Tripura, and the night the devas lit their lamps.

What happens: at temples, the Jwala Thoranam is lit, a hanging arch of dry grass set alight, and devotees pass beneath it. At home, the 365-wick lamp is lit, one wick for every day of the year, in a plate of ghee or oil, so the family's lamps for the whole year are offered in one evening. Lamps are floated on rivers and tanks. In Tamil Nadu the same night is Karthigai Deepam, and the great lamp on Tiruvannamalai hill is lit.

Why the lamps: Karthika Pournami is also called Tripurari Pournami and Deva Deepavali, the Deepavali of the gods. A lamp on this night, the Puranam says, carries the merit of lamps lit all month.

If you do only one thing this Karthika, light a lamp on this night and let it burn until morning.

Vanabhojanam: Why Eat Under the Usiri Tree?

One day in the month, usually a Sunday after Pournami, families pack food and go to an orchard or a park where there is an usiri (amla) tree. They worship the tree, cook or eat beneath it, and spend the day outdoors. This is Karthika Vanabhojanam.

Why the usiri: the Puranam places Vishnu in the amla tree in Karthika, and Lakshmi worshipped him there. A meal eaten in its shade is a meal eaten in their presence. Usiri is also the fruit of the season, and the picnic marks the end of the rains and the start of the cool months.

Abroad, any tree will do if there is no amla. The point is the day out, together, in a month that is otherwise spent at the pooja shelf.

How Can You Observe Karthika Abroad?

More easily than any other month. Most of Karthika is done at home with a lamp, a bath and a book.

The one thing to get right is the date. In the USA, UK and Canada the month begins on Monday 9 November, a day before India, and each tithi may fall a day earlier through the month. Use a panchang set to your city, or ask us for your dates before the first Somavaram.

Winter is the other thing. Tulasi will not survive a Chicago November outdoors. Bring the plant in, or keep a picture of Tulasi at the shelf and offer the lamp there. The tradition has always made room for the climate.

What is Ksheerabdi Dwadashi?

The twelfth day of the bright half of Karthika, Saturday 21 November in 2026, when Vishnu is married to Tulasi and the season for weddings reopens.

Why is Karthika Masam so holy?

It belongs to both Shiva, who defeated Tripura on its full moon, and Vishnu, who wakes from his four-month sleep in it. The Karthika Puranam gives the lamp, the bath and the reading of this month special merit.

Can I observe Karthika Masam without fasting?

Yes. The lamp at dusk and the chapter at night are the heart of it. Fast on the Somavarams if you can; take fruit or one meal if you cannot.

Which oil for the Karthika deepam?

Sesame oil is traditional, especially for the lamp at the door. Ghee is used for the lamp before the deity.

Can Karthika pujas be done online?

The daily observances need no pandit. For Somavaram abhishekam, Tulasi Kalyanam on Ksheerabdi Dwadashi, or Satyanarayana vratam on Pournami, a pandit can guide the puja live while you perform it at home, with the sankalpa in your name and gotra.

What to Do This Karthika

Start on 10 November with the lamp and the first chapter, keep the four Mondays, dress Tulasi as a bride on the 21st, and light every lamp you own on the 24th. That is the month.
